based on my bbc viewing experience- glastonbury 2004 review:
1)amy winehouse -boring
2)basement jaxx -v.v.good
3)oasis -not so bad as everyone seemed to whine about
4)snow patrol -yummy!
5)green fields vt -groovy man; do you like my braids and hemp skirt?
6)morrisey -boring
7)orbital -maybe possibilities here if you're on something, but otherwise, boring---one of those you-have-to-be-there sort of gigs
8)elbow -hard to pay attention to music due to horrible background dancers--i'm generally one of those people who gets on the stage and hams it up whenever possible--do i look like that? i certainly hope not.
9)ordinary boys -ha ha ha ha
10)paul mccartney, sir -well, he's just great. naaa na na na na na naaaa, na na na naaa
11)muse -blackout seemed a suitably depressing penultimate choice for glastonbury, however, the ensuing wreckage was gratuitous and the guitar-on-head balancing act, cringe-worthy.
12)mud -looked like wicked fun! i was always a slip 'n slide lass myself.
Good night.
Czech Rep. 3, Denmark 0
see, I know what I'm talkin 'bout! Now (unless there's more penalty madness) I'm thinking we'll see Czech Republic v. Portugal on Independence Day. But let's not get ahead of ourselves. I'll see you all on Wednesday and Thursday for the sem-fins, same time, same place, same deck of cards.
PS: since I saw Arsenal beat Leeds 5-0 at Highbury, I think I'm qualified to write a book to rival Nick Hornby's. What do you think?
PPS: Row, possibly Hamster, possibly Morganstern, possibly King Philip, and I are heading to Eire for Oxegen. Come on LenLow, just swim!
PPPS: and did I mention that LenLow (aka Shmuke) is also a brilliant musician? no? well he is and y'all should check it out! Go Shmuke.
"as you wish"
and "you'll have to get up very early to best me in the film quotes game, very early indeed." both spoken by very great people---one and the same, actually!
Now, I am off for a most excellent MLT sandwich.
You should all see the new Harry Potter movie because Wayne Rooney is in it--only he's about 5 years younger.
Also, I hope that the Denmark/Czech game is not so difficult as the Holland/Sweden match. I was cheering for Holland, but that was one of the most evenly matched games and to finally end in penalty kicks just stinks. I don't think I've ever seen a match with so many crossbar/post shots. Now we want the Czechs to win. The Czechs take all.

england v. portugal, harry potter, and pj harvey
Well, I won't get all worked up about the england/portugal game again. once was enough. was quite a stressful evening! all the people on this side of l'ocean know what happened--and perhaps shmuke and drs1 on the yank's side. but for a quick recap (as i should like to read my blog to my grandkids someday as a chronicle of my life and times), england lost a goal that would have won the game cuz the ref thought john terry was "pushing" the portuguese goalkeeper. it was all a bunch of crap. then we went to penalty kicks which is always crap. beckham missed his and at first i was in utter disbelief at what seemed to be a baggio, but in the end (2-2reg/ot, 6-5pens) i might feel a bit sorry for the lad, as the ball really did bounce off the ground when his foot hit the pitch next to it. that was a crap penalty spot. still, apart from all the overtime and penalty stuff, in general england's defence has never been very strong (in my opinion) in this tournament, except cole who did a decent job containing ronaldo on thursday. in fact, england should attend some defence tutorials run by greece as i thought their (greece's) defending was very impressive this evening--leading to thierry & co. heading home (sorry Pottaaaa!!). so many have asked who i will support now that england is out. well, the first one that comes to minde would have to be the czech republic. i have been most impressed with their playing and i like prague---they've got great marionette shows.
as a small parenthetical here, i'd like to point out that it's 2am and i'm v. tired as have just returned from a Green college bop that vaguely reminded me of a high school dance. therefore (and thus), this will be a rambling post; fairly monotone and supremely uninteresting, but i feel like talking. that's the great thing about a blog--it can't tell you to shut the hell up. and now that i've nixed the comments, none of YOU can tell me to shut the hell up. brilliant.
right, so shmuke, have just flipped the telley on for some bedtime reading, and glastonbury was there. so there you go! you can now live vicariously through my television via my blog. although, to be honest, it's only been on a few minutes and i'm going to bed. snow patrol was great. so was fish patrol, and longfish Hamster! apart from snow patrol, the only other performance i saw was some whiny guy singing about "the average man"---i saw this performance at 1:40am and it was blah. then, there was pj harvey, which was quite possibly one of the worst things ever to hear before going to bed---or at any time for that matter. "she" was simply dreadful.
you know, when i went to see greenday in beantown at the hatchell and lost my sweatshirt to the moshers and lost my vans to the mud...what?
oh and i saw harry potter today avec margarita-- she's stilll searching for her lost shaker of salt. ;) potter was good. i did, in fact, enjoy the new direction. i did.
tomorrow i will find boxes to ship contents of life home. they will have to be big boxes or numerous boxes.
shmuke and drs1, i will be home on the 13th---when does soccahh staaaahhht!? ahhhh, i cannot wait to return to proper beantown hypercorrection of the Rs. it has been too long.
Good Night.
ps: to all those who know how much i struggle, i have beaten two loads of laundry into submission today---well, it's been almost a 24 hour process and it's still not "put away," but it's done.
---and i played a killer hand of rummy!
thank you.
one last thing, i watched rocky again a few days ago. sylvester is a talented old chap. i should also like to have turtles named cuff and link. maybe one day i will.

***breaking news****
///////this just in...
apparently, ms. minelli, whilst recovering from a long-term illness at her home in LA, has declared that she is now "back in the game" and will make a curious commission for a painting of "two puffins fighting" as part of her plan to stay on the right track when she returns home next month.
Well done ms. minelli and congratulations!
And now its tea-time ladies, Bring it on Essex and Maple Leaf!

only two things
there are only two things you need to know about that game (portugal/spain) and they are:
1) casillo and ronaldo are both beautiful, beautiful, and did i mention beautiful? people.
2) it's what's on the inside that counts.
Also, on an entirely unrelated note (well not completely unentirely, there is the football connection), I've lost my fat les cassette tape---of course, i don't even think i have a cassette player anymore so it would be useless even if i did know where it was! anyhow, if anyone can help me out with the vindaloo song and "england's coming home" song----both of which i used to know and love whilst residing in nice for the world cup 98!! man, those were the days.
but, if anyone has those, they have specific nostalgia qualities for me and i would most appreciate a burn. thanks!
ok, off to examination schools! (well, in approx. 11 hours)---do you think they'll mind how wrinkled my gown is? ironing is just sooooo much trouble, i mean at least it's clean, what more do they want!

hum
real things make me nervous. hum. hm. hmmmm. living in douglas addams-type world holds much more security...for those on the outside of the book of course.
hum.
oh the stress
no, not the revision, holland/czech republic. man i'm stressed! it was just such a good game but i feel we can't really know the winner because of the red card. he shouldn't have been sent off. still, i was impressed by the czech republic, i had no idea they were so strong. and this was a tough reffing game, where some offside calls could have made all the difference. it seems to me that both teams deserve to move on, at least the dutch goalie who had to get beat up on at the end when they were short-handed--i mean it was just fire after fire. hmm, was a good, good game though. and i revised the whole time. actually, did not get to the telley til the last minute of the first half, so i missed a lot of good stuff, probably for the best as i'm exhausted from what i did see.
well, as it turns out
i really have very little to complain about. if only my problems were the worst in the world.

ooooops!
whilst i was revising and NOT watching fantasy football NOR blogging, i managed to bring back my blogging buddies. it's been too long. but you all know how quickly things change round here, so i apologise now for any sudden changes that will most likely happen again. i am just capricious, capricious, capricious. that will never change.
did you SEE ibrahimovic's goal!???!!!!
wow. that was just so great. that goes in the list, that goes in its own list. i missed the rest of the game cuz i just got back from the library! but that was a beautiful thing to come home to. hamster, i can never thank you enough for the gift that has given me itv! and sorry to have missed you on monday, will see you post-exam!
so i'll have to see the rest later, can't stay up that late tonight. is crazy what life is like when you get up at the crack of dawn. i was at the library at 9:30am and left at 8:30pm, that's madness! i don't think i've ever seen the library at 9:30am, in fact, there's very little i've ever seen before 11am. well, like i said, that will all change now that my student days are coming to an end soon. so, i'll have to catch the rest of the italy/sweden game some other time, although i think i heard italy's goal while i was in the library---the jcr was NOT quiet about it---and who decided that the best place to put the jcr would be directly under the library anyway? and while we're on that subject, i feel like i'm part of a museum exhibit lately, little troops of tourists come in every once in a while to have a look at mansfield's little treasure of a library--it is sweet.
ok, love you all, back to the telly! i mean books.

was that a mullet convention?
oh no, sorry, it was just Italy's football team. however, coiffing issues aside, this game was infinitely more interesting to watch (on a purely skill/exciting shots-on-goal level as oppose to a cultural/last-minute-loss sort of level) than poor little england's match. i would have liked denmark to win as i have played in that country and feel a bond. the nil-nil ending was indeed a bit of an anti-climax, but there was some great yelling, pushing, shoving, and matrix-style slide tackling that added to the general hilarity and entertainment of the event. overall, it was a very good day for revision i'd say, very good indeed.
Sunday, June 13
poor, poor england
was a frustrating game indeed. granted, france did maintain ball posession for most of the game, but winning because zidane kept getting handed the shots, c'est terrible. england missed their penalty shot---you NEVER miss a penalty shot. Gramps would not be pleased. but lampard's goal was lovely, absolutely lovely. was assisted by baldy barbie doll beckham, but that's ok, we'll give him credit for a v. nice assist. and the commentator guy? what was his deal?
am quite sleepy at the moment and have to get to bed, but wanted to check in and say hello from revisionville, UK. to be honest, i believe i talk a lot more about the revision than i actually do the revision. i complain. i'm good at that. it's good to be good at something. and there's always plenty to complain about, like, say, laundry. all you out there who have been with me since the beginning of my blogging days in jan. of 04, know that seldom does a week of blogging go by without a laundry complaint.
but, there are good things too. things not to complain about. the new university club, for example. it is fantastic. it is great. i cannot give it enough praise. i can, however, complain about the fact that it only just opened last week---that stinks. would have been great to have had this whole year---finally a place where all the postgrads are, we have found each other at last. the place is great though. they've got big screen tvs all over the bar area, which is where we all watched la match this evening. they have another giant movie screen upstairs (we were too late for seats there), there's a bar, a restaurant, a deck, a pool table, lots and lots of comfy chairs (key). in short, it's great. and in great, i'm short.
other things not to complain about include the lovely bbq i went to yesterday (however, can complain about distance walked to get to and from the bbq). was a mad success in my opinion as we had an excellent session of footie that got violent at times, but showcased some silky skills and v. minimal beer spillage. and met some great new people too-- some fellow bostonians and a lovely group of bristolites who like to make rules.
oh and finally got to eat at the kazbar today---have been wanting to go there for ages and it's only downstairs from me. the cowley road festival was going on so there was general mayhem all day outside my window, but it was nice cuz the kazbar moved tables outside and we got to brunch on tapas in the sunshine whilst people-watching, one of my favorite things. i saw the copoeira group. i remember my copoeira stint...will never be more than a stint. is fun to watch though.
man, i'm rambling, soooooo tired. although, as tired as i am, it is a pity i won't get to learn more about gentoo penguins and the places that rabbits live this evening, as this was not only educational, it was great fun too. :)
G'night for now everyone.

crap blogger!
woo hoooooo! i know my blog has all fallen apart, etc. and i apologize for everything being gone, etc. will attend to all this asap post-exams. of course, i may as well get used to this sort of sparse blogging life as this must be what it's like to live in the real world where you have to work all day and sleep at night (i do the opposite of course)...
am working now though, am revising greatly. have just returned, however, from throwing stuff at row eric row who hath finished exams! i am jealous. but v. happy for her. and we did almost take out a tourist's eye who had the unfortunate timing of walking down high street just as the champagne cork shot all the way from examination schools side entrance on merton street out onto the high street, mid-traffic. i'm surprised i ddid not cause huge accident, ending in bad article in OxStu.
right, back to revision for now, can't wait to see you all again. lots of love!
and happy hippity hoppity birthdays to Grammie and row Erica Row (for jUne 9th!)!!!

comments v. Marxian and New Left approach
well, have successfully deleted comments by accident. however, will have to attend to this matter later as the post-consensus marxian and new left historians have beaten the comments out in terms of priority. what has the world come to?
been a long time
well, i don't know about you guys out there, but i just caught a glimpse of my blog on a mac and things look all out of wack. hmmm, maybe the whole thing has just fallen apart in my absence. as you may have gathered, the dissertating is done. in celebration, finally went punting for the first time on friday with some other revelers--was great. i love the punting. was a beautiful, sun-shiny day too. the rest of the weekend saw some great football action and thus, a bit of a tan, excellent. scored a couple of goals in the mansfield jcr v. catering staff game, the first one and then a penalty kick right in the lower left-hand corner--would have made Gramps proud. have now smoothly made the transition from dissertating hell to revision misery. good times my friends, good times.
by the by, did you all catch the transit of venus? no, neither did i, but i learned all about the boy Jeremiah who first spotted it in 1639, brilliant lad. one day i, too, will make such a contribution to the world.
but for now, i'll just blog and revise.

the new goal
so my friends, the original goal of being at the binders thursday at 4 did not come to fruition. the new goal is to the disssertation to the radcliffe infirmary on the other side of the world by noon. is 6am now and have been watching printer print for about an hour. is dire. am still on first copy. need two. then off to binders who say they guarantee hour service. i need sleep. i need food. and i miss everyone! i hate my room...is dark dungeone where i hve been held captive by dissertating dragon fro many days. ahem, composure. right, off to find some breakfast.

Wednesday, June 2
it's 4:19am and
i want chinese food.
and thanks for the text menace. i just might see the end of this schmissertation yet.
and sorry i won't make glastonbury for your vicarious living shmuke.
and you're so right, MLS, you're so right, if only they'd accept my blogs as dissertation.
and 'sigh'...
The Goal
am going to finish up this meandering rumination on academic bullhonkey and be to the binders by 4pm tomorrow. and because this has been posted to blog, it must be truth. will keep you posted.
"it's always better to have a big long wick"
a choice quote from currently airing (channel 4) episode of Stargate SG-1, "Absolute Power."
Stargate SG-1
if you've ever been up all night dissertating, then you'll know the likelihood of becoming a sci-fi fan when you weren't one before. i mean, don't get me wrong, i loved War of the Worlds when Gramps told me to read it. and i was reasonably fascinated and somewhat repulsed by Abyss when my Mom suggested we try and watch every video in the video store starting from "A". but i'm normally not a sci-fi kinda gal. in fact, i'm probably still not. but, i have to say, in the wee small hours of the morning, watching Dr. Sam try and save the human race from extinction becomes substantially more interesting than the creation of my bibliography could ever hope to be. thanks for listening.
Tuesday, June 1
me@yahoo.com
you know, whilst i've been hard at work dissertating, ahem, i've found that there's an imposter out there with a myname@yahoo.com email address. and they've also got a yahoo profile and everything that says they've got my name, my age, but that they live in Texas and they work as a data entry clerk. just in case anyone's been wondering, that's not me. i haven't been lying to everyone about where i come from and what i do. and i'm hoping that when i finish my dissertation, i won't become a data entry clerk, not that there's anything wrong with being a data entry clerk---have done it myself in the past, it's just that i've had enough, to be honest, of entering data. i am at a place in my life where i'm ready to create the data. hmmm, what else? I want to see the new Harry Potter movie!
dissertatatorial achievements since last blog
none.
other achievements since last blog:
1) healthy nutella consumption
2) quality time with Friends
3) top notch staring into space
4) depressed and disillusioned further by watching news
5) reattached banned ethernet cable
6) scored goal against Japan with lovely pass from good 'ol Gary Neville (ok, maybe that didn't really happen)
7) marvelled at Beckham's unflattering lack of hair
8) and apparently just missed England's goal by flipping to the competing "Inside the Mind of Liza Minelli"
...it just doesn't get any better than this.
communications disclaimer
if, over the next few days, you don't:
hear from me, see me, receive replies to emails/phone calls/texts from me, or indeed, see comments on your blog from me, (and some of you have become quite used to this already---sorry!) 'tis because i am now one with the dissertation until Friday at noon. right, so this was just as much to convince myself as it was you. we'll see how long it is before i post again or indeed before i complain via comments on your blog again. we'll see. we'll just see.
